Multimedia

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer- controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally. A Multimedia Application is an Application which uses a collection of multiple media sources e.g. text, graphics, images, sound/audio, animation and/or video.

Characteristics of a Multimedia System

A Multimedia system has four basic characteristics:

·      Multimedia systems must be computer controlled.

·      Multimedia systems are integrated.

·      The information they handle must be represented digitally.

·      The interface to the final presentation of media is usually interactive.

Components of a Multimedia System

Now let us consider the Components (Hardware and Software) required for a multimedia system:

Capture devices

-- Video Camera, Video Recorder, Audio Microphone, Keyboards, mice, graphics tablets, 3D input devices, tactile sensors, VR devices. Digitizing/Sampling Hardware.

Storage Devices

-- Hard disks, CD-ROMs, Jaz/Zip drives, DVD, etc.

Communication Networks

-- Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM, Intranets, Internets.

Computer Systems

-- Multimedia Desktop machines, Workstations, MPEG/VIDEO/DSP Hardware

Display Devices

-- CD-quality speakers, HDTV,SVGA, Hi-Res monitors, Color printers etc.

Consider a multimedia system

In the early twenty-first century, broadcast television and videotapes record moving pictures by using 30 still pictures or frames for every second of motion. Broadcasts and videotapes use a standard developed in the 1950s in the United States, the National Television Standards Committee broadcast standard. Other countries use 25 frames per second and have different image-aspect ratios (ratio of height to width). At the start of the twenty-first century, the high-definition and digital television broadcasting being introduced will change the standards; pictures will have better quality because of an increase in the number of pixels and a change in the aspect ratio of the picture.

More expensive tuner and capture cards on computers allow for "full-motion" capture by saving all of the frames and sound. Because these files become very large (640 × 480 pixels per frame times 30 frames per second—over 9 million characters for 1 second), several methods have been developed for compressing motion video files. Video is compressed to save it as a smaller file and is decompressed during playback. Several codec systems use hardware including computer chips and software such as MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group). Since video files are large, they are usually brief recordings or clips from video. The clips are used in business presentations, on Web pages, as product descriptions, or as other media bytes to emphasize an important point in a short time. Advances in storage capacity and speed of newer storage media will eventually allow for smoother and longer clips. Video streaming from Web sites stores large video clips on the host Web site and allows the video to "stream" in smaller segments to the Internet user.

Videos

Moving images that have been captured or created electronically by a computer. The term video refers to the moving picture, accompanied by sound such as a picture in television. Video element of multimedia application gives a lot of information in small duration of time. Digital video is useful in multimedia application for showing real life objects.

Some Important Milestones of Videos

1986 –Professional digital video introduced

1990 –QuickTime format introduced as a consumer digital format by Apple computers

1995 –Professional and consumer digital videotape (DV) format released

1996 –DVD (Digital Video Disks) players introduced

1996 –WRAL-TV becomes the first television station to broadcast in HDTV (high-definition television)

2009 –All television stations nationwide in the US began broadcasting exclusively in a digital format (DTV)

Video Used In

·         Education

·         Information

·         Entertainment

·         Advertising

Characteristics of Video

Analog

Video in Multimedia A non-digital representation of information in a continuous flow, rather than as individual pieces of data

Digital

A representation of information as individual pieces of data

Aspect Ratio

Dimension of width to height

Frame Rate

Speed at which video frames appear; Measured in frames per second (fps).

Streaming

Video in Multimedia process of transmitting audio/video files over the Internet that begin playing as the remaining data is temporarily transferring to your computer. User friendly because video can be viewed as the file is loading without having to wait for the completed file to load.

Dependent on Video

The term video refers to the moving picture, accompanied by sound such as a picture in television. Video element of multimedia application gives a lot of information in small duration of time. Digital video is useful in multimedia application for showing real life objects. Video have highest performance demand on the computer memory and on the bandwidth if placed on the internet. Digital video files can be stored like any other files in the computer and the quality of the video can still be maintained. The digital video files can be transferred within a computer network. The digital video clips can be edited easily.

Video in Education

Many computer games and lecture with focus on education are now available. Consider an example of an educational game and lecture which plays various rhymes for kids. The child can paint the pictures, increase reduce size of various objects etc apart from just playing the rhymes. Several other multimedia packages are available in the market which provide a lot of detailed information and playing capabilities to kids.

Video in Entertainment

By using video marketing of new products can be greatly enhanced. Video boost communication on an affordable cost opened the way for the marketing and advertising personnel. Presentation that has flying banners, video transitions, animations, and sound effects are some of the elements used in composing a multimedia-based advertisement to appeal to the consumer in a way never used before and promote the sale of the products.

Video in Hospital

Multimedia best use in hospitals is for real time monitoring of conditions of patients in critical illness or accident. The conditions are displayed continuously on a computer screen and can alert the doctor/nurse on duty if any changes are observed on the screen. Multimedia makes it possible to consult a surgeon or an expert who can watch an ongoing surgery line on his PC monitor and give online advice at any crucial juncture.

In hospitals multimedia can also be used to diagnose an illness with CD-ROMs/ Cassettes/ DVDs full of multimedia-based information about various diseases and their treatment. Some hospitals extensively use multimedia presentations in training their junior staff of doctors and nurses. Multimedia displays are now extensively used during critical surgeries.

Video Pedagogues

Pedagogues are useful teaching aids only if they stimulate and motivate the students. The audio-visual support to a pedagogue can actually help in doing so. A video tutor can provide multiple numbers of challenges to the student to stimulate his interest in a topic. The instruction provided by pedagogue have moved beyond providing only button level control to intelligent simulations, dynamic creation of links, composition and collaboration and system testing of the user interactions.

If video field stopped working for a month

Digital video files can be stored like any other files in the computer and the quality of the video can still be maintained.

Stop for one month connection

learners are more likely to make cognitive connections when information is presented in multiple modes. Integrating multimedia (e.g. images, audio, video, etc.) into students course content encourages learners to make connections between text and information received through these other channels. If video field stopped working for a month, lost connection to my learners.

Not create video content

Video content can help students develop active learning assignments, team building activities, and facilitate a flipped classroom model. The Center can help instructors work through strategies for a particular project and with best practices for creating assignments that use video or other multimedia tools for teaching and learning. If video field stopped working for a month, lost my content create idea.

Not use video to enhance

CTI can consult with instructors who wish to use video to enhance teaching and learning in these areas:

·         bringing multimedia into the classroom

·         recording lectures for student viewing

·         using video conferencing technology to host remote guests or students, to hold online office hours, and allow remote student groups to “meet”

·         integrating video posts in a student discussion board

If video field stopped working for a month, lost video enhancing.

Stop Classroom technology

Instructors needing to deliver course audio to students will be issued a video recording device which attaches to a lapel (lavalier) microphone. Ensuring the accessibility of video & multimedia content is an important part of creating a course in which all students can benefit from the information and activities you design. If video field stopped working for a month, stop my digital class process.
